Houston Students Learn Renewable Energy Hands-On

Earlier this year, Green Mountain had the opportunity to donate to a classroom in need through DonorsChoose.org, an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students gather funding for special projects. We chose to give our money to Mrs. Olukoga's 5th grade math and science class in Houston, Texas. The class wanted to "be green" and investigate ways to protect and conserve natural resources by building renewable energy models.

The project funding was used to purchase a Hydro-Wind Education Kit, and the students recently finished their renewable energy models! More pictures of their projects can be found on the project's website, and we received the following note from Mrs. Olukoga:

"I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of you for providing my students with the opportunity to have a real-world experience dealing with Alternative Energy Resources. My students were really excited when we received the Hydro-Wind Kit. After receiving the kit my students were able to grasp the concept of choosing resources that consist of clean energy. My students were also able to create 3-D models of the five different types of Alternative Energy Sources. The five different types of Alternative Energy that my students created models for are: Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric, Biofuels, and Geothermal Resources. Again, I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Without people like you, I honestly don't know in which direction would education be heading!"

This was just one of the many deserving projects on  DonorsChoose.org that great teachers are seeking support for.  Check out the site today to see how you can help make a difference for students in your community!
