Claim to Fame:

Maryland’s first and only free, on-site community composting program will increase its capacity by 75% by installing the nation’s largest advanced commercial-grade biodigester. The facility will now be able to divert nearly 1,200 additional tons of food waste annually from Baltimore area landfills.

Project Overview

According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, 1.3 billion tons of the world’s food is lost or wasted every year. That's one-third of the total food produced annually for human consumption. Founded in 2018, 4MyCity tackles the issue of food waste at the local level by utilizing a four-phase sustainability plan to identify commercial food waste source reduction, implement food rescue, create biodegradable products and reduce waste impact through composting. To date, the organization has distributed over 180 million pounds of food to families facing hunger and diverted over 35 million pounds of organic waste from landfills and incinerators.

4MyCity was awarded a $154,000 Sun Club grant to expand and scale its on-site composting program, which is the first of its kind to be established in a city setting. A 6,000-pound-capacity commercial-grade biodigester will quickly break down food waste by 90% within a 24-hour cycle, increasing total system capacity to 14,000 pounds. Additional benefits of this new technology include no odor or pests and a more compact space compared to traditional composting.
