In 1890, the 15-bed Pittsburgh Hospital for Children opened, and in 2009, the hospital moved to a new 313-bed campus, one of the first LEED-certified pediatric hospital campuses in the United States. As the only pediatric hospital in the western half of Pennsylvania, the Edible Garden and Mindfulness Path is available to 5,000 staff and faculty and 198,000 kids plus accompanying adults, guardians and siblings each year.
Outside of the cafeteria, the Edible Garden and Mindfulness Path will be made possible through a $78,375 grant from the Sun Club to purchase and install a living wall, plants, composting, irrigation, solar pathway lighting, three Big Belly trash units (trash, compost, recycling), and seating. Additionally, educational components can be viewed throughout this newly upgraded natural setting.
