Green Mountain customers who join the Sun Club are making an even greater difference by playing a direct role in building solar energy systems on the buildings and grounds of great non-profits. Members of the program contribute $5 a month through their Green Mountain Energy® electricity invoice in Texas or bundled into their rate in New York. Those funds are then distributed to organizations, such as schools, museums, zoos, and social outreach charities, that serve their communities.
Since the Sun Club was started in 2002, 35 solar donations have been made to amazing institutions in Texas and New York. Some of the most recent include Habitat for Humanity, the Greenmarket at Union Square, and numerous learning institutions that have incorporated their arrays into the curriculum.
The environmental impact of the nearly 500 kW of solar energy systems donated through the program has been staggering. Combined these facilities are capable of avoiding as much as a million pounds of CO2 annually, which is like not driving 1.1 million miles or recycling 3.3 million aluminum cans instead of sending them to the landfill!
