Winter can be enchanting, but it can also harm your skin. Cold air, low humidity and indoor heating can lead to dryness and discomfort. While effective winter skincare can include using heavy creams, it should start with simple habits and products that protect and restore your skin's natural balance. Winter skincare can be simple; here’s how to keep your routine effective and sustainable.

Be gentle

Swap out heavily fragranced body washes and soaps for fragrance-free or EWG Verified™ options. The chemicals in some products are too harsh and can irritate dry skin. Products with fewer synthetic additives are gentler on your skin and better for the environment. Look for the U.S. Department of Agriculture organic seal to ensure the ingredients are organically sourced.

Go natural

Synthetic fabrics like polyester and poly blends can trap heat and moisture, which often irritates dry or sensitive skin. Natural fibers such as organic cotton, hemp, and TENCEL™ are breathable and gentle, which reduces friction and helps your skin maintain its natural balance. Plus, these fabrics are sustainably sourced, allowing you to stay warm and comfortable without compromising your eco-friendly values.

Turn down the heat

Taking hot showers can feel amazing on cold winter mornings, but water that is too hot can irritate dry winter skin and strip away essential oils. Additionally, they can increase energy consumption, as your water heater uses a lot of electricity. Instead, try taking shorter, lukewarm showers to benefit both your skin and your energy bill. Bonus tip: By reducing your shower time by just a couple of minutes each day, you can save 150 gallons of water each month.

Add moisturizer

Frequent handwashing is beneficial for your health, but it can also dry out your skin. Choose moisturizers with natural oils like coconut, shea or jojoba. Skip petrolatum and choose plant-based oils, which can help reduce your environmental impact. Also, since moisturizers in tubes often have thicker formulas that form a protective barrier, choose products with recyclable or refillable packaging.

For an extra eco-friendly boost, look for vegan products that are cruelty-free and made with biodegradable ingredients.

Bundle up

It might go without saying, but make sure you bundle up before heading out in the cold—and don’t forget your face. Consider wearing natural fiber gloves, scarves, and neck gaiters to help lock in moisture and shield against cold, dry air. You should also protect your lips and cheeks with eco-friendly balms and oils made from sustainably sourced ingredients and minimal packaging.

Don’t let dry skin steal your winter joy. Stock up on sustainable creams and fabrics to help prevent dry, itchy skin. Making a few simple, earth-friendly swaps can make a big difference.
