Supporting Superstorm Sandy Relief Efforts

Superstorm Sandy undoubtedly took both an emotional and physical toll on the East Coast, as the latest reports from CNN estimate that Sandy left nearly 8 million Americans across 15 states without power and caused $50 billion in economic damage.

On behalf of our employees and customers in both New Jersey and New York, we are supporting the relief efforts in those areas through donations to the American Red Cross. We are also donating funds to help restore the natural resources that were affected. We’ve committed a $3,000 donation and will be increasing that amount with an additional $5 contribution for every new East Coast residential customer that signs up in person with us at one of our retail or event locations.

Our donations support:

  • The American Red Cross, providing shelter, food, and physical and mental health services to families and entire communities affected. Green Mountain is donating to the National Disaster Relief fund and some of the local branches where we serve and office.
  • Riverkeeper, which protects the environmental, recreational, and commercial integrity of the Hudson River and its tributaries, and safeguards the drinking water of nine million New York City and Hudson Valley residents. Riverkeeper will sound the alarm on pollution caused by the storm and organize necessary clean-up efforts.
  • Big Reuse, New York City’s only non-profit retail outlet for salvaged and surplus building materials, which will support the sustainable rebuilding of New York City.

Green Mountain offers residential customers in certain parts of New York and Pennsylvania a choice of pollution-free electricity products using renewable energy sources, like wind and the sun. By becoming a Green Mountain Energy Company customer, you can simultaneously help reduce the production of greenhouse gases  that contribute to climate change, which can cause more severe weather events like Superstorm Sandy, and also contribute to the relief efforts to help communities affected by the storm.

We wish our East Coast friends a speedy recovery and hope that all of the combined efforts make a lasting difference in affected communities.
