Sun Club Donation Helps Shelter Animals Reduce Their Carbon Paw Print

We made a few new furry friends this week with our most recent Green Mountain EnergyTM Sun ClubTM donation of $50,000 to Texas Humane Heroes for a new solar array! Anyone who’s ever owned a household pet knows how much they love to bask in the sun, and soon these animals can bask in the rays beaming onto the shelter’s solar panels!

In 2012 alone, Texas Humane Heroes (THH) found homes for 2,595 homeless dogs and cats. The new solar array, set to be installed later this spring, will generate electricity for the organization’s facilities, reducing their CO2 emissions through the use of pollution-free solar energy and saving THH money on operational costs, allowing them to expand their programs and raise more awareness of both the environment and adoptable animals in the area. The array will be placed on top of a pavilion in the middle of a new Memorial Garden being planned on their property, where visitors can go to remember their beloved pets.

Ron Marullo, Executive Director of Texas Humane Heroes and former Green Mountain employee, decided to apply for the solar array from the Sun Club because protecting the environment and using renewable energy aligns with the values of the shelter. The environmentally-conscious organization is excited to begin using the power of the sun to further their goal of providing thousands of animals each year with safe shelter.

Stay tuned for an update on the array installation later this spring! In the meantime, check out photos from the event on our Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenmtnenergy/
