Green Mountain Customers Brighten Houston School with Solar Donation

Solar donation helps H.I.S.D. school achieve leadership in sustainability

Our  Sun Club™ has brought a little more sunshine and a unique educational opportunity to the students at Houston’s Wilson Montessori School. We recently flipped the switch on the school’s new solar array donated by the Sun Club, which will provide a pollution-free source of power for the magnet school and help students learn about the importance of solar energy.

The 9.55 kilowatt (kW) photovoltaic array, installed on the roof of Wilson’s outdoor pavilion,  was made possible by a $50,000 donation from the members of the Sun Club — the program I manage which empowers Green Mountain’s residential customers to have a direct hand in the development of new solar energy installations at non-profit organizations.  The array is expected to generate about 11,600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy each year. By using solar energy instead of traditional power, the school will avoid the equivalent CO2 generated when driving 15,000 miles in a car a year!

The donation also includes a monitoring system displaying the output of the solar array and electricity needs of the building. Students will compare classroom usage with the amount generated by the system and look for ways to conserve.

This is the 44th Sun Club dedication since the Sun Club was founded in 2002. Recently the program has also expanded outside of Texas to New York and Pennsylvania, giving even more Green Mountain customers a way to make a greater difference for the environment and their communities. To date, the Sun Club has helped install more than 520 kW of solar power! For more information and to find out how you can join the Sun Club, visit www.gmsunclub.com.
