Project Overview

The Science Barge is the tiny-house approach to urban farming, cultivating a fresh perspective on growing fruits and vegetables in the city. It was developed by NY Sun Works to serve as an example for sustainable rooftop gardens that don’t require soil and need less space than conventional gardens. Acquired by Groundwork Hudson Valley in October 2008, this floating farm currently operates as an environmental education center. Solar panels, wind turbines and bio-fuels provide all its power, and collected rainwater and purified river water irrigate its hydroponic greenhouse. The Barge operates completely off the grid and grows produce including lettuce, tomatoes, melons, popcorn, peppers and eggplant with zero net carbon emissions, zero pesticides and zero runoff.

The $50,000 Sun Club donation to the Science Barge will be used to increase the size of the existing solar array by 3.4 kilowatt and replace the existing energy storage equipment
