Powered by 100% solar energy, Construction Junction’s warehouse facility helps the organization achieve net-zero energy status, thanks to a rooftop solar array that will further strengthen the company’s commitment to sustainable living.
Founded in 1999, Construction Junction is Western Pennsylvania’s first nonprofit retailer specializing in the reuse of used surplus building materials. Its mission is to promote conservation through the reuse of building materials.
Globally, only 8.6% of the 100 billion tons of building material consumed is recycled, accounting for a third of the Earth’s resource consumption and 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions and landfill space. Over the past 24 years, it is estimated that Construction Junction has enabled the continued use and reuse of more than $5.75 million worth of building components and materials.
The organization’s 100-year-old, 100,000-square-foot warehouse supports daily operations, reuse and recycling services, and The Urban Wood project in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh.
Construction Junction’s long-term sustainability goal (initially set in 2009) to replace its aging roof and seek cleaner energy solutions came to fruition with the approval of a $245,000 Sun Club grant. With the completion of the rooftop solar array, Construction Junction will finally achieve net-zero energy status.
