Frequently Asked Questions

If your free solar assessment determines that installing solar is a good fit for your home, you’ll then work with our solar installation experts to get answers to your questions and to choose the right solar panel system for your needs and budget, including options like rooftop, carport, or ground-mounted solar panels.

We’ll be right there with you every step of the way, lending our experience and our expertise to make the process go smoothly. And once everything is figured out, your system can be up and running in as fast as a day!

There can be a lot of things to navigate when you’re considering solar, including how much sunlight your home gets, the condition of your roof, any HOA or deed restrictions, and more. Signing up for a free solar assessment will take the guesswork out of deciding whether solar is a good fit for your home.

If you install your system before 2024, you also get to use the U.S. Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit, allowing you to deduct part of the solar system’s cost on your federal tax return.

Solar panels typically require very little maintenance during their lifetime. The biggest concern — dirt and debris blocking the panels from the sunlight—is usually resolved by rain and gravity. However, you may need to clean your panels periodically if you’re in certain environments just to make sure you capture the most solar energy possible.

Because warranty terms vary by installer and equipment manufacturer, it's best to consult the warranties of your solar panel installation and equipment for specifics on what maintenance issues may be covered.

The cost of purchasing and installing solar panels for the home varies. It’s best to request a solar assessment to get an accurate quote for your particular home. (Go ahead — it’s free and only takes a minute to get started.)

One way to offset the initial cost of a solar panel system is to put it to work for you. Our Texas customers have the option to enroll in our Renewable Rewards® buyback program. . Or, if you’re not ready to install your system just yet, you can still support solar and start saving for it with our Solar Panel Fund plan.

Before you can use your system, you’ll need to have an interconnection agreement with your local utility to ensure that you’re safely connected to the grid. We’re happy to answer any questions you have about the process during your free solar assessment.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the longevity of a system, from the technology used to the stress it’s placed under. Also, like any other system in your home, regular preventative maintenance will ensure you get the most life out of your solar panels as possible. With these factors in mind, solar system manufacturers say that a solar panel system could last as long as 25 to 30 years. Along with installation rebates, many manufacturers will also offer warranties that cover significant portions of your system’s life. Make sure to ask about these warranties when getting your estimate.

Net metering puts your system to work for you by giving you credits for the excess energy you send back to the grid. Renewable Rewards®, our net-metering solar energy buyback program, allows our Texas customers to get bill credits for their system’s excess energy.

And, if you install your solar panel system through one of our installation partners, you have access to an exclusive version of our net-metering plan. It’s a win-win for you and the planet.
