Here’s what you need to know about electricity deregulation.

What is deregulation? Deregulated electricity markets let consumers choose their retail electricity provider, which drives competition in the electricity market. In short, deregulation gives consumers the power to choose the plan, energy charge and a retail electricity provider that aligns with their beliefs and values.

What’s the difference between regulated and deregulated markets? In a deregulated market, you can choose your retail electricity provider (REP) and plan. For a while, Lubbock Power & Light has been the only choice you’ve had. Your billing and power delivery were all handled by them. Soon, you’ll be able to choose an electricity provider and plan that works for you. And Lubbock Power & Light will serve as your city or municipal utility, which means they’ll continue to transmit and deliver power to you as well as maintain your poles, wires and meters.

What does deregulation mean to me? As a customer, it means that you’re not locked into one electricity company. You have consumer choice on your side and can look for a provider that fits your lifestyle and needs best — ranging from plan options and features to customer service. Plus, you can decide whether the electricity you’re powering your home or business with is clean or dirty. If you choose us as your retail electricity provider REP, we’ll start your service, handle your monthly billing, and give you tools and guidance to help you get the most of your 100% clean energy plan.

 

Lubbock will become deregulated on March 4, 2024. Starting January 5, 2024, Lubbock Power & Light Customers will have a window of opportunity to shop for a retail electricity provider. If you do not choose a retail electricity provider during that time frame, you will be sent to a default provider. If you decide to choose a Green Mountain Energy electricity plan after Lubbock becomes deregulated, you can easily switch at any time.

Lubbock Power & Light will be responsible for transmitting and delivering electricity to your home or business and for maintaining your electrical equipment. If you experience a power outage, see a fallen pole or power line, or have an issue with your electric meter, you will contact them to resolve the issue.

Most of the electricity generated in this country comes from nonrenewable, polluting sources like fossil fuels. In fact, generating electricity is the number-one industrial cause of air pollution in the U.S. Renewable energy, on the other hand, is pollution free and uses naturally replenished and inexhaustible sources like the sun and wind.
