A new hydroponic lab producing 500 heads of lettuce a week will supplement more than 2,000 student meals per year.

Project Overview

IDEA Public Schools was founded in 2000 as a tuition-free charter management organization. The organization’s mission is to prepare students in underserved communities for success in college and citizenship.

Today, nearly half of IDEA Public Schools campuses are recognized on the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's list of America's Healthiest Schools. Currently, there are 70,000 students in IDEA Public schools across Texas, Louisiana and Florida.

Thanks to a $178,776 Sun Club grant, IDEA Public Schools was able to establish a hydroponic lab inside a 40-foot climate-controlled shipping container. This new Leafy Green Machine is equivalent to 2 acres of traditional farming and only uses 5 gallons of water a week with zero waste. An adjacent outdoor classroom will serve as an educational hub during field trips for approximately 4,100 Fort Worth-area students.
