Rooftop solar
75 kW
Trees for Houston’s mission is growing greener thanks to a 75kW solar array that will power 50% of their brand-new headquarters' energy needs
Since 1983, Trees for Houston (TFH) has helped transform the greater Houston area by establishing and renewing green infrastructure throughout the city. Providing trees to neighborhoods, schools, parks and community partners over the last three decades, they have dramatically improved environmental equality through their tree-planting program. As of 2021, TFH has planted over 600,000 trees in the area and is also a major contributor to the City of Houston’s RE-Plant Houston initiative.
As it begins its 40th year of service, Trees for Houston will finally have a facility of their very own to call home in Houston’s Oak Forest neighborhood. The new campus will feature an education center, ample meeting and event space, a tree nursery and a nature sanctuary.
Sustainable additions include a water-capturing system and a rooftop solar system to align with the organization’s commitment to environmental stewardship. A $136,080 Sun Club grant will fund the 168-panel solar system on the new building’s roof, which is expected to generate 112 megawatts of solar energy annually. These annual energy cost savings are equivalent to purchasing and planting 224 new trees annually, or 6,720 trees over the lifetime of the array.
