First Solar Array on a College Preparatory School in Houston
For over 40 years the Chinquapin School has provided economically disadvantaged youths from the Houston area with the opportunity for a better future through education. Through its rigorous curriculum and an emphasis on community service and earning what one receives, Chinquapin aims to produce responsible, well-educated citizens who will become constructive leaders in the community.
In 2009 Sun Club was thrilled to donate funds to install a solar array on the teachers' residence building to help reduce the school's energy costs. Every dollar saved goes right back into their programs helping the brightest young minds in Houston get the best education possible. The students also learn from the array through an interactive monitor display in the science classroom.
“This solar array adds an important visual element of sustainability to the duplex, substantially reduces the building's operational costs, and contributes to greater awareness and education about alternative energy at both Chinquapin and the larger community," said David Heinzerling, director of Technology for Chinquapin School.
