Fourteen repurposed shipping container townhomes in The Cotton Groves community have gone solar, resulting in an estimated savings of $17,500 in annual energy costs for homeowners.
Habitat for Humanity’s vision is to create a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Since 1976, the global organization has addressed poor housing conditions across the world. The Collin County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has empowered homeowners by building 228 new homes in the 24-cities it has served since 1992. Their latest project, The Cotton Groves, addresses the need for affordable housing in McKinney, Texas. This new 2.75-acre container home development will offer 35 qualified families home loans that they otherwise wouldn't traditionally qualify for, and reduce their annual energy costs with rooftop solar panel systems.
Partially funded by a $210,000 Sun Club grant, the community will be the first of its kind in the U.S. This eco-friendly neighborhood is composed of repurposed shipping containers that include rooftop solar and EV charging stations. Shipping containers are a high-end, cost-effective, eco-friendly way to repurpose materials that may otherwise go unused. These steel structures can also withstand weathering, keeping maintenance to a minimum.
