How to Transfer Your Renewable Energy Plan When You Move

Moving houses and moving van

Moving to a new home is an adventure filled with possibilities and new beginnings. Amid the excitement, it's crucial to ensure a smooth transition of essential services, particularly your renewable energy plan. Many folks are pleasantly surprised to learn that their commitment to clean energy can move with them to a new home.

Think of this guide as your friendly neighbor, here to walk you through the easy steps to transfer your Green Mountain Energy plan to your new address, so you can keep powering your life with sustainable energy without skipping a beat.

Our Step-by-Step Guide to Transferring Your Renewable Energy Plan

Step 1: Check your current plan details.

First things first: review your existing renewable energy plan. It's important to understand your plan's contract, including your contract expiration date, terms of service and any transfer or cancellation conditions. As a Green Mountain Energy customer, you can review this information by logging in to My Account and going to My Electricity Plan under the Plans and Services tab.

Step 2: Confirm your new address is in an area we serve.

Before transferring your renewable energy plan, it can be helpful to confirm that your new address is in an area serviced by Green Mountain Energy. If you're staying within the same state, transferring your plan is typically a breeze. Moving out of state? No worries! Just use your new ZIP code to view plans in the area.

Step 3: Notify Green Mountain Energy of your move.

About a month before your move, you should start the transfer of service. Easily schedule your transfer online by logging into My Account and navigating to Move My Service under the Plans and Services tab. You will need your current address, new address and move-in date to complete this process. If you need further assistance, you can contact our Customer Service team.

Step 4: Schedule your transfer of service.

Let's get the timing right. Set your electricity to switch off at your current home the day after you plan to be moved out. This helps ensure you have electricity for your entire moving day. You should also schedule your service to start at your new address the day before move-in; that way, you'll have power before you arrive at your new home.

Are you renting? You may need to speak with your landlord or property manager about any additional steps for setting up utilities.

Step 5: Ensure a smooth transition on moving day.

Moving day is here! Double-check that your service has started at your new home. If your new home has solar panels, check if there's any additional setup or approvals needed.
