Save energy and live greener while relaxing this summer
No sweat! We have you covered. Whether you’re hitting the outdoors for your favorite summer activities or keeping your home comfortable during the hottest months of the year, a few simple choices can help make it your greenest summer yet.

Summer is one of the highest electricity usage periods of the year. Approximately 60% to 70% of the electricity you use is just for cooling your home. After you set up your home for success with an energy audit, consider implementing these new habits to give your A/C (and your energy consumption) a break.
Turn up your thermostat. For every degree below 78°F, you can expect about a 5% – 7% increase in your cooling costs.
Check your air filter. A dirty filter slows down airflow and makes your system work harder to keep you more comfortable.
Set your ceiling fans for summer. Make sure your fans are running counterclockwise to create a cooling downdraft.
Remember the 4-by-4 rule. If you’re going to be away for more than four hours, set the thermostat 4° higher.
Unplug your electronics. Stop vampire power from draining your wallet by putting your unessential electronics on a power strip so you can unplug them when not in use.
Embrace cooking outdoors. When you don't your stove or oven to cook your meals, they can't heat up your home and make your A/C work harder than it should.
Going green in the summer doesn't stop with saving energy. Both at home and on vacation, there are eco-friendly ways to help yourself and the planet.
If you still have clutter from spring cleaning, make sure your old phones, cords and computers don’t end up in a landfill.
Some summer staples are better for the environment than others, like sunscreen that doesn’t harm ocean life.
If you’re remodeling your home this summer, these green building practices can have a lower impact on the environment.
