Everything IS Bigger in Texas

Forever, Texas has been strongly associated with the words oil and gas. Not anymore! The state has been hard at work, making over the environmental face and attitude of Texas.

Forever, Texas has been strongly associated with the words oil and gas. Not anymore! The state has been hard at work, making over the environmental face and attitude of Texas.

As a state, Texas has historically been the nation’s dominant provider in the oil and gas industry dating back to the late 19th century and early 20th century, when the Lucas No. 1 well in Spindletop, Texas spewed oil over a hundred feet in air for over nine days. People thought that it was drops of black gold falling from the sky.

Currently, Texas still serves the nation as the top producer of oil, gas, and electricity. However, with a transitioning economy, the state of Texas capitalized on its abundant resources to move towards renewable energy.

Texas is now one of the largest producers of wind energy in the nation, producing over one-third of the United States’ supply. In addition, the state of Texas is home to seven of the nation’s top ten largest wind farms, including all of the top five.  The Texas mentality, everything is bigger in Texas, holds true even for its natural resources.

As a Green Mountain customer, you’re helping support renewable energy in the Lone Star State, including the Green Mountain Energy® Wind Farms–Langford and Elbow Creek in West Texas.   The more customers like you who sign up for renewable energy, the more we can help green up the Texas energy portfolio and help change the way power is made!

UPDATE, July 2018: Elbow Creek Wind Farm is closing down operations.
