Residents, commuters and visitors in Houston will now have more choices for ecological and sustainable alternatives to get around, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club to Houston Bike Share’s B-Cycle program, which was used to install a new, solar-powered Houston B-share station and purchase eight bikes located at Jackson Hill and Memorial Drive. Houston B-Cycle and the Sun Club celebrated the dedication of the new B-station during a special ribbon-cutting event on Tuesday, March 22, 2016.
Houston B-cycle is a next-generation bike-sharing program offering an easy way to get around Houston with zero emissions. It is the only bike sharing program that measures the actual distance traveled on each ride and tracks calories burned and carbon emission prevented. The new station added eight available bikes to the city and helped expand the total system to 31 stations (13 of which are solar-powered).
"The Sun Club loves working with unique non-profits that are dedicated to their communities and sustainability,” said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager, Green Mountain Energy Company. “We chose Houston Bike Share for its commitment to cleaner air and better health and wellness for its users in and around the city of Houston.”
“We are thankful to the Sun Club for this donation, and for helping us expand our bike share system,” said William Rub, operations manager for Houston Bike Share. “The new station allows us to better serve the city of Houston and protect our environment.”
Since its founding in 2002, the Sun Club has donated more than $4 million to sustainable programs focusing on renewable energy, energy efficiency and resource conservation in numerous Texas communities and markets in the Northeast. Contributions to the Sun Club come from Green Mountain Energy Company’s residential customers in Texas, Green Mountain Energy Company, its employees and other Sun Club supporters who believe in the program’s mission to support local non-profit organizations through solar and sustainability projects.
Non-profit organizations interested in applying for a sustainability grant from the Sun Club can now apply for projects under any of the program’s new pillars, including: Renewables – solar, other renewable technologies; Environment – water conservation, air quality, waste reduction, sustainable agriculture; Community – energy efficiency upgrades, green commuting initiatives, public space enhancements; Education – environmental stewardship, promotion of careers in sustainability.
