Carbon Dioxide Emissions Avoided
Our customers make a difference! Since 2002, we have tracked the total amount of renewable energy that we have delivered to our customers and the resulting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions avoided, as shown in the graphs below.
Choosing cleaner energy and carbon offset products helps the environment by avoiding CO2 emissions associated with electricity made by fossil fuels and investing in projects that reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. We only count the avoided CO2 emissions attributable to “new” renewable energy facilities as defined by the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) as part of the Green-e Energy National Standard. CRS defines “new” facilities as those that began operation or were repowered within the past 15 years (e.g., 2002 for 2016 sales). The energy generated by these new facilities displaces the need for an equivalent amount of energy from fossil fuel-powered facilities, thereby avoiding the CO2 emissions that would have been created in the absence of the renewable energy generation.
In 2018, our customers had the largest annual impact ever, avoiding more than 9.9 billion pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2)! That’s the equivalent of not taking 11 million cross-country flights. Over the past 19+ years, our customers collectively have avoided 73.0 billion pounds of CO2 by choosing cleaner electricity and carbon offset products. To put that into perspective, that’s like:
- Taking 7.9 million cars off the road for a year
- 77.2 million households turning off their lights for a year
- Planting 8.6 million trees
We’ve been in Texas since the market opened to electricity competition in 2002. As a result, we’ve built quite a community of renewable energy supporters who have made a significant difference for the environment. Their year-by-year impact is shown in the first chart below.
The second chart displays the growing impact that our customers are having in an expanding number of markets nationwide.
Renewable Energy Delivered
When customers choose Green Mountain, we ensure that renewable energy is delivered to the grid to match the renewable percentage of their electricity usage. Delivering renewable energy to the grid reduces the need for fossil fuel-based electricity generation. Generally speaking, new renewable energy facilities deliver electricity that affects the order in which existing facilities generate electricity for the grid and the future plans for fossil-fueled generators. The chart below shows how much renewable energy has been delivered to the grid on our customers’ behalf back to 2002.
