Annual avoided carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to not taking 800,000 roundtrips between Dallas and Ft. Worth each year
Fort Worth, TX - Sundance Square today announced a continued agreement with Green Mountain Energy Company to provide renewable energy to the downtown district through 2018. This announcement builds on the relationship that began in 2008, marking the Square’s 10-year pledge to sustainability through the choice of cleaner electricity.
Sundance Square is a mixed-use development that encompasses 35 city blocks at the center of downtown Ft. Worth and attracts more than 10 million visitors each year. The historic district’s new agreement with Green Mountain includes an increased commitment to 50% renewable wind energy. By making this increased commitment, Sundance Square builds on its reputation as a local and industry leader. In 2010, the Square received the Green Power Leadership Award from the Center of Resource Solutions for increasing awareness of renewable energy.
“Sundance Square has been committed to urban renewal for decades,” said Johnny Campbell, President and CEO of Sundance Square. “Through our partnership with Green Mountain Energy, we continue to use renewable energy and extend our efforts to promote sustainability in downtown Fort Worth. By purchasing cleaner, renewable energy, we are creating an environmentally friendly entertainment, business and residential district. Sundance Square has become a model for being good stewards of environmental resources and companies look for sustainable practices when considering leasing space.”
Environmental impact from choosing renewable energy:
- Since becoming a Green Mountain customer in 2008, Sundance Square has avoided 499.1 million pounds (lbs) of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through its use of renewable energy.
- That’s like 256,200 households turning off their lights for a year.
- In the next five years, Sundance will purchase 165 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind energy from Green Mountain.
- Through its use of renewable energy, Sundance Square is estimated to avoid approximately 46.9 million lbs of CO2 each year. The equivalent of planting 5,500 trees or not driving 872,500 roundtrips between Dallas and Ft. Worth on I-30.
Sundance Square chose Green Mountain Energy to provide electricity generated from pollution-free sources like wind as part of its overall sustainability efforts. Sundance Square utilizes a Gem e4 Global Electric Motorcar on the streets and recycles plastic bottles, aluminum cans, copy paper, cardboard boxes, newspapers and additional materials to reduce their carbon footprint. A desk side recycling program has also been introduced and become very successful for the development.
“Sundance Square is a leading example of urban renewal in the nation and we’re thrilled to continue bringing renewable energy to its unique tenants and events,” said Jeff Bettison, Vice President of Commercial Sales, Green Mountain Energy Company. “We look forward to the opening of the plaza which will bring residents and visitors an even better experience and added awareness about the importance of renewable energy.”
The contract also includes naming Green Mountain as a Primary Sponsor of Sundance Square so visitors can learn more about renewable energy as part of events and displays hosted onsite.
Green Mountain Energy Company was awarded the five-year electricity contract after a competitive bid process facilitated by Schneider Electric (formerly known as Summit Energy), the energy consultant for Sundance Square.
Located in the heart of downtown Fort Worth, historic Sundance Square is a 35-block commercial, residential, entertainment and retail district where people work, live, shop and dine. Sundance Square’s beautiful landscaping, red-brick streets and turn-of-the-century buildings make it a pedestrian’s delight. Named after the famed Sundance Kid, who used the Fort Worth area as a hideout, Sundance Square has been hailed as a monumental achievement in urban redevelopment.
