What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy is 100% pollution-free and produced from renewable sources that are naturally replenished and practically inexhaustible — namely, from wind and the sun.

Choosing clean energy helps make a difference by supporting the development of new pollution-free generation facilities around the country. The demand created by Green Mountain Energy customers has helped spur the development of more than 50 new wind and solar facilities across the U.S.

It’s time to get squeaky clean! Check out our short video about how clean energy works.

Enjoy the power to choose in Texas.

When the Texas Legislature restructured the retail electricity market in 2002, it gave Texas residents like you the option to select your preferred Retail Electric Provider (REP). Texas electricity customers benefit from this market competition through better customer service, lower prices, more incentives offered by REPs and, in the case of Green Mountain Energy, the option to choose 100% clean, renewable energy in Texas.

Fun facts about clean energy in Texas:

* In 2023, Texas generated over 34 percent of its energy from wind power and solar power.2 Go, Texas!

* Texas added 2,300 megawatts (MW) of wind power in 2017 alone—enough to power more than 450,000 homes.3

* Texas tops the nation in wind-powered generation capacity, with more than 21,450 MW.4 Maybe everything really is bigger in Texas!

* Since 2014, Texas has produced more wind electricity than both of the state’s nuclear power plants.4

The future of clean energy looks bright.

Texas energy providers

Regardless of who you choose to supply your electricity, there is only one Transmission
and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP) in a given area. A TDSP maintains the region’s
poles and wires, reads your meter and responds to outages. Texas has four major TDSPs:
Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP-Texas and Texas New Mexico Power.

How is my billing handled?

Billing is simple. When you choose Green Mountain Energy electricity, you will receive a single bill from us that includes generation charges and covers transmission and distribution charges from the utility as well. Learn more about how to read your bill.

How do I read my bill?

Our interactive tool will walk you through each section of your Green Mountain Energy electricity bill and explain all of the details.

Why was I charged a late fee?

As a Green Mountain customer, you have 16 days after the issuance date on your invoice to pay the bill by the due date. After the due date, a late fee of 5% of the overdue account balance will be assessed.

Why did my bill go up (or down) last month?

There are two main things that determine the amount of your invoice: the amount of electricity you use during the month, and the rate you’re paying per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for that electricity, or:

  • # kWh used * cents per kWh rate = Green Mountain Energy Charge

This information is located in the Detail of Charges/Credits section on the back page of your bill.

Please know that the rate above may not be the same as the rate on the average price paid line, which could include fees beyond your base rate for electricity generation.

You can always learn more about your usage trends by logging in to My Account.

Average billing helps customers avoid large surprise bills and makes it easier for you to manage your budget. Our Average Billing program makes the amount you pay each month smoother and more predictable by basing your payments on your average monthly charges over the whole year. Your monthly payments are based on an average of the charges on your current and last 11 bills. Each month, we’ll review your account and add or subtract 1/12th of any deferred balance onto your next monthly payment.

1 The free nights electricity charges (8:00 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.) will be reflected on your monthly bill and are included in the average price calculation. Green Mountain Energy reserves the right to discontinue this plan without notice.
