Renewable energy generation growing in U.S.

Inspiration is never hard to find at Green Mountain Energy.

Thanks, in part, to your commitment, renewable energy generation continues to grow rapidly!

Recently, the U.S. Energy Information Administration released data showing that renewable energy sources (like the wind, solar, and hydro resources found in our cleaner electricity products) provided 14 percent of the U.S. net electric power generation during the first six months of 2013. This is nearly 5% higher than the same period in 2012.

Taking a closer look at those numbers reveals that solar grew by 94% and wind grew by 20% year-over-year.

“The appetite for renewable energy continues to increase," said Jennifer Clymer, Environmental Manager at Green Mountain. “We've seen great growth in consumer demand for renewable energy, as more and more homeowners understand the environmental benefit of choosing electricity generated by pollution-free sources like wind and solar. The amount of wind energy produced has increased by more than 28 times since Green Mountain pioneered the voluntary market in 1997. With costs on the decline, solar is also making strides, with solar output expected to more than double between 2012 and 2014."

There’s still more work to be done, however. Coal still accounts for the largest share of electrical power generation in the U.S. at 39 percent, followed by natural gas and other gases (26 percent).
