Limit winter’s impact on your energy bill

Are you concerned that the polar vortex will cause your energy bill to spiral out of control?

We’re here to help, but first, these are the facts: Abnormally cold temperatures across the U.S., and particularly in the Northeast, recently have created a strain on the electricity grid. As a result of the increased demand for power and elevated usage, customers likely will experience higher than average bills this winter.

We believe that conserving energy is a big part of our mission to change the way power is made.  Below are some helpful tips, tools we offer to customers, and links to resources you can use to reduce your usage, limit your exposure during the cold weather, and avoid bill shock.

  • The Google Nest Learning Thermostat™ allows you to remotely adjust your thermostat via mobile app, and with Seasonal Savings it learns your behavior to fine-tune the temperature to be more efficient. We’re the only supplier to offer 100% renewable energy bundled with the Nest. See why customers love Nest, and learn more.
  • Two factors control your energy bill: your overall usage and your price per kWh rate. By enrolling on one of our fixed rate plans, you can minimize any rate fluctuations. As for reducing your usage, read below for some ideas.
  • For our Texas customers, enrolling on My Account allows you to monitor your usage on a daily basis, view your projected bill, and receive a weekly Green Mountain View email that displays your updated power consumption AND your environmental impact. Create an account here.
  • Avoid running large appliances like dryers and electric ovens during peak energy demand hours (6-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.).
  • Close shades and blinds at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. Keep them open during the day so the sunlight can help warm your home.
  • Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances.
