24 Years of Renewable Energy, 24 Hours of Sustainability

In August 1997, a group of like-minded folks set out on a mission: to change the way power is made. They believed that everyone could power their lives with electricity that came from renewable sources, and they set out to make it as easy as possible for people to get started.

It’s been 24 years since our green journey began, and in those 24 years our customers have significantly reduced the carbon footprint of their homes and businesses and supported a cleaner electric grid for their communities. Today, we’re proud to be the nation’s longest-serving renewable energy retailer and a completely carbon neutral company that’s helped our customers prevent more than 90 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Without a doubt, we couldn’t have come this far without our most valuable clean energy partner: you.

Still, there’s a long way to go before we reach that cleaner, greener future we’ve been dreaming about. So in honor of our 24 years in the renewable energy business, we’re issuing a challenge to everyone who wants to see the same green future that we want: Do something sustainable for every part of your day.

Here’s the challenge:

You’ve woken up in the morning, your tummy is rumbling, and the first thought that’s going through your head is, “Y’know what? I want a good breakfast.” Scrambled eggs, hash browns, whole-grain toast, a pot of coffee, the works. So off you go to the kitchen to whip up a spread for the whole family. At the end of your cooking and breakfast-having adventure, you have a bit of food waste: eggshells, potato skins, bread crust (since your son doesn’t like the crust), coffee grounds and the coffee filter. Well, instead of just tossing it all in the trash, compost it!

Now that everyone’s been fed, it’s time to take care of yourself and your home. Since we’re still in the swelter of summer, close the window blinds on the sunny side of the house to limit the heat coming in. That way, your A/C doesn’t have to work so hard to keep things cool. Then it’s time for a fun sustainability project. Maybe a little gardening? Or shopping for clothes made from sustainable fabrics? Or how about meeting up with some friends to share ideas and tips for living greener? Either way, you do you.

It’s afternoon, and the school day is over. But instead of driving the car to pick up your kiddos or having them take the bus home, how about you all go car-free? Biking home can be a fun treat for your children on a special afternoon. Take their bikes up to the school in the morning and come back on your own bike to pick them up. Then the whole family can take a fun bike ride back home with no car used and no emissions made.

It’s nighttime, and now that you’re all home from work and school, it’s time to take care of some small chores. When you run your washer, dryer and dishwasher late in the day, you’re saving the majority of your electricity usage for off-peak times, which places less stress on your local electric grid. Also, make sure you run them as efficiently as possible, doing full loads using sustainable detergents and cold water. Just like that, you’ve reduced your carbon footprint!

We love giving sustainability tips for every hour of the day, but one of the biggest ways to help the environment is to make the commitment to using clean energy — all day, every day. That’s why, for 24 years, that’s all we’ve dreamed about.

It’s truly been our honor to serve you for the past 24 years. We couldn’t do the things that we’ve done for the environment without your commitment to finding a greener way to live your life. And despite how proud we are of what we’ve achieved together, the thing that excites us most is the sustainable future that lies ahead.
