3D-Printed Wind Turbines Are on the Scene

Keeping tabs on the latest and greatest renewable technologies is one of our favorite pastimes. As you probably know, 3D printing has taken off in a big way and offers an environmentally friendly benefit in reducing the number of raw materials needed in the manufacturing process.

We took notice of two 3D printing projects that utilize wind energy.

  • Students at Winchester Thurston School in Pennsylvania were challenged to create a portable device that charged mobile devices using renewable energy. They used 3D imaging software to design wind turbines and 3D printing to manufacture their designs. They also used upcycled PC fan motors as their generators. This project gave the students valuable hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and an appreciation for life lessons.
  • Janulus, whose company policy is to promote a positive impact by maintaining a high standard for social responsibility, is putting wind power at our fingertips with the Trinity Wind Turbine. It’s a portable wind turbine, manufactured using 3D printing, that generates energy for your smartphone. The team launched it on Kickstarter and has already received funding for more than half of its $50,000 goal.

If you can get your hands on a 3D printer, try creating your own micro wind turbine using RMRD TECH’s DIY print files. The company wants to make sustainable energy practical, affordable and accessible to all using open-source collaboration coupled with digital fabrication and advanced manufacturing techniques.
