Discovery Green and Green Mountain Energy make it a team effort when it comes to bettering the environment. Since 2008, Green Mountain has helped Discovery Green avoid more than 22 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) by powering day-to-day operations, concerts and special events with 100 percent clean energy.
“We’re thrilled to continue our commitment to clean energy with our partners at Green Mountain,” said Barry Mandel, president of Discovery Green Conservancy. “Sustainability is not just a catch phrase for us – it’s a way of life, and it’s important we ‘walk the talk’ by powering our facilities with clean energy.”
Discovery Green avoided almost 3.7 million pounds of CO2 in 2016, which comparatively is like …
- Taking 396 cars off the road for a year.
- 2,696 households turning off their lights for a year.
- Planting 438 trees.
- Recycling 3,794,137 newspapers instead of sending them to a landfill.
In addition to powering the park with pollution-free electricity, Discovery Green ensures that building methods operate sustainably while offering beauty and usability to the public. The park’s winter attraction, which locals and visitors love to experience, is The ICE, a unique ice skating rink that’s energy efficient and environmentally friendly – thanks to the park’s partnership with Green Mountain. At 7,716 square feet, the rink’s ice-skating surface is the largest of its kind in the Southwest.
Green Mountain values Discovery Green’s planet-protecting efforts when considering the rink’s carbon footprint. The water used to create the ice was recycled from Kinder Lake, and the rink used glycol for cooling, as opposed to more traditional, less efficient methods.
Green Mountain is proud to serve an organization that leads the way in environmental stewardship and has achieved a Gold rating from the LEED Green Building Rating System, along with being recognized as a 100 percent Green Power User by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
