In taking a look at our cleaning supplies, we realized we could do a little better when it comes to creating plastic waste AND using more natural ingredients that go easier on our planet. And while these are not designed to disinfect and will not kill any viruses, they can help make your house feel spick and span with just a few pantry staples. Check out our sustainable substitutes that you can swap in when your favorite cleaner runs out!
Natural Granite Cleaner
Adapted from Nature’s Nurture
- 1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol)
- 3-5 drops dish soap (any will do!)
- 5-10 drops essential oil (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups distilled or tap water
- Combine ingredients into clean spray bottle. Close tightly.
- Shake until well incorporated.
- Put to use!
Natural Bleach Alternative
Adapted from The Hippy Homemaker
- 1/2-gallon glass container, amber preferable
- 3/4 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1 Tbsp. citric acid (optional)
- 20 drops of essential oil (optional)
- Filtered water
- Carefully pour first four ingredients into 1/2-gallon glass container, and secure cap shut.
- Shake until citric acid has dissolved.
- Reopen and fill rest of container with filtered water.
- Store out of sunlight.
Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- 5-10 drops essential oil (optional)
- Sprinkle enough baking soda to lightly dust the inside of your toilet bowl.
- Add essential oil to toilet bowl.
- Slowly pour white vinegar over the baking soda, moving carefully to not wash the baking soda off but to create a light fizz.
- Finish cleaning with toilet bowl brush. Flush when finished!
