How is my billing handled?

Billing is simple. When you choose Green Mountain Energy electricity, you will receive a single bill from us that includes generation charges and covers transmission and distribution charges from the utility as well. Learn more about how to read your bill.

How do I read my bill?

Our interactive tool will walk you through each section of your Green Mountain Energy electricity bill and explain all of the details.

Why was I charged a late fee?

As a Green Mountain customer, you have 16 days after the issuance date on your invoice to pay the bill by the due date. After the due date, a late fee of 5% of the overdue account balance will be assessed.

Why did my bill go up (or down) last month?

There are two main things that determine the amount of your invoice: the amount of electricity you use during the month, and the rate you’re paying per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for that electricity, or:

  • # kWh used * cents per kWh rate = Green Mountain Energy Charge

This information is located in the Detail of Charges/Credits section on the back page of your bill.

Please know that the rate above may not be the same as the rate on the average price paid line, which could include fees beyond your base rate for electricity generation.

You can always learn more about your usage trends by logging in to My Account.

Why have I not received my first bill?

You should receive your first bill within 45 days. If this time frame has passed, please call us at 1-866-785-4668 Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT.

Do you offer average billing?

Average billing helps customers avoid large surprise bills and makes it easier for you to manage your budget. Our Average Billing program makes the amount you pay each month smoother and more predictable by basing your payments on your average monthly charges over the whole year. Your monthly payments are based on an average of the charges on your current and last 11 bills. Each month, we’ll review your account and add or subtract 1/12th of any deferred balance onto your next monthly payment.
