Your natural gas utility will continue to send your bill. A standard utility bill has line items for supply and distribution. After you enroll, your supply charge line item will be from Green Mountain Energy. Your natural gas utility will continue to charge the standard amount for distribution.

Your switch to Green Mountain Carbon Conscious℠ natural gas will be effective within 1-2 months, depending on your billing cycle.

By choosing Carbon Conscious℠ gas, you help offset the carbon emissions caused by your natural gas by supporting projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions. When you use Carbon Conscious gas, we buy carbon offsets from U.S. projects that work to remove or prevent carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. These offsets essentially cancel out the emissions from your gas usage, keeping you carbon neutral.

Gas units are measured in one of the following ways:

  1. CCf: Equals the volume of 100 cubic feet (cf) of natural gas.
  2. MCf: Equals the volume of 1,000 cubic feet (cf) of natural gas.
  3. Therm: Roughly equivalent to a Ccf.

We're committed to helping our customers live a more sustainable lifestyle, and to making it easy. When you choose Carbon Conscious℠ gas,  we purchase carbon offsets that compensate for the amount of carbon emissions caused by your natural gas consumption. We're proud to be one of the few suppliers who offer this to customers.

Like other energy suppliers, we can't guarantee savings, or that our rates will match your local utility or our competitors. Our focus is giving you the most value out of your plan by making it simple to reduce your impact on the environment and do good for our planet.

Absolutely. We only purchase offsets approved by Climate Action Reserve (CAR) or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), both recognized leaders in carbon offset program verification.

The Carbon Conscious℠ gas plan can only account for and offset the carbon emissions caused by the natural gas you use at home. But by choosing this plan, you are still lowering your own carbon footprint and making a positive contribution.

A carbon offset credit is generated for each ton of carbon dioxide equivalent that is reduced or removed as part of a verified greenhouse gas reduction project. The credits are used to compensate for emissions occurring elsewhere. While credits can be generated in a variety of ways, we invest primarily in projects that capture or destroy greenhouse gases that otherwise would have been emitted, such as methane gas capture projects at landfills, or destruction of ozone-depleting substances.

No, the Carbon Conscious℠ plan doesn't alter the natural gas delivered to your home. It's exactly the same, but your plan will help offset the carbon dioxide emissions associated with your natural gas usage. While this is a cleaner option than standard service, the Carbon Conscious℠ plan is not technically a renewable or green product.

Natural gas is still among the most efficient fuel sources for heating and is used extensively in many parts of the country. At Green Mountain Energy, we offer a cleaner approach to natural gas with the Carbon ConsciousSM plan. It helps you offset your carbon footprint and reduce your environmental impact because we purchase carbon offsets for the natural gas you use, compensating for the carbon released into the air by burning natural gas.

The Carbon Conscious℠ plan is a natural gas plan for residential customers. When you choose this plan, the natural gas delivered to your home is still exactly the same, but we purchase carbon offsets to help reduce the environmental impact of natural gas usage. We purchase 1 metric ton of carbon offsets for every 188.6 therms of natural gas that we sell.

We know our customers need natural gas, so we're proud to offer a cleaner option that makes a difference for our planet. The more customers we can enroll, the more carbon offsets we can purchase. The more offsets we purchase, the more greenhouse gases we’re keeping out of the atmosphere. And that's a good thing!
