Doing Good for Local Communities and for the Planet

Nonprofit organizations have a tradition of giving by supporting their local communities with education, resources and assistance. But did you know that many of these same do-good organizations put the planet first by using sustainability solutions to shrink their carbon footprint?

The list below features recipients of grants from the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club,® which helps make nonprofits shine even brighter. Its mission is to invest in nonprofits to advance sustainability for people and for the planet. To date, the Sun Club has empowered nearly 100 nonprofit organizations and donated over $6.5 million to prevent more than 2.6 million pounds of CO2 emissions.

Overbrook School for the Blind

This school is receiving a solar array, which will reduce its electricity needs, allowing more resources to be funneled to the 200 students it serves in Philadelphia. Its mission is to develop and deliver education that enhances the options available for persons with visual impairments, including those with additional challenges, so that they have the greatest opportunity to experience active and fulfilling lives.

Tree Pittsburgh

This nature center restores and protects urban forests in the city of Pittsburgh. It’s the only agricultural business in the state to be completely powered by solar energy, and it’s considered net zero, thanks to a new solar array.

Urban REAP

Healthy food options are available in a North Waco community due to the development of a sustainable aquaponics greenhouse. This food advocacy organization provides area residents with organic, locally grown food and on-the-job training to create opportunities for economic sustainability in the region.

Wesley Community Center

Energy efficiency upgrades helped this community center significantly cut its utility costs. Due to the savings on electricity bills, the organization can supply Houston’s Northside community with an additional 6,000 more meals each year. The Wesley team helps prevent homelessness and supports low-income families through education, social services and emergency food services.
