Project Overview

Founded in 1956, Young Audiences of Houston is the nation’s leading arts in educion nonprofit organization and the first organization to be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Now in its 65th year, YAH serves more than 140,000 children through more than 2,000 programs across Houston and Texas. YAH reaches over 200 community partner sites and 260 artists to serve youth, 88% of whom were previously at risk and 79% of whom are economically disadvantaged.

A $50,000 grant allows the YAH Living Mural program’s newest installation at the Young Women’s College Prep Academy to teach children the foundational elements of agriculture and urban farming, sharing sustainable growing practices and environmentally friendly design methods for a city garden on their school campus.

This newest outdoor space will save YAH over $150,000 in facility rentals for outdoor programming. Over the next 10 years, it will also save more than 1,000 hours of driving in single-occupancy vehicles to source materials from citywide vendors. Cost savings will go directly toward the future expansion of the Living Mural and Arts + Environment residency program.
