Solar United Neighbors’ East Houston Solar Co-op is accepting new members—

HOUSTON – September 14, 2020 – Solar United Neighbors’ East Houston Solar Co-op has selected Green Mountain Energy to serve the 30-member group and increase the growth of residential solar in Houston. Chosen through a competitive bidding process over four other firms, Green Mountain will provide each member with an individualized proposal based on a group rate through its installation partner Green Light Solar.

The East Houston Solar Co-op had a virtual kick off in March and was established by Solar United Neighbors. Solar United Neighbors (SUN) expands access to solar by educating Houston-area residents about the benefits of distributed solar energy, helping them organize group solar installations, and strengthening solar policies and its community of solar supporters. The East Houston group is the fifth bulk purchase program that SUN has organized in the Houston area since December 2018.Residents in the East Houston area, including Sheldon, Pasadena, League City and La Porte, who are interested in joining can sign up by September 30, 2020 at solarunitedneighbors.org/ehouston.The solar Co-op is free to join and joining is not a commitment to purchase panels.

"It was an honor to be a part of the selection committee," said East Houston Solar Co-op member, John Cotter. "I have been a solar advocate for years, and finally in 2019 I was able to install an 8.5kW solar system on my home. It has produced enough electricity over the past eight months to cover more than my entire usage. The vetting process to select Green Mountain and Green Light was educational. It was interesting to see how the market has changed in just the last year. We can now install a similar system for less with backup battery costs coming down as well. I am excited to continue making the environment a little bit better one install at a time."

Co-op members selected Green Mountain based on the company’s experience, competitive pricing, warranties and overall product offerings.Green Mountain will also provide its exclusive solar rebate incentive, which provides homeowners with important savings on their installation costs.

"As the Houston Climate Action Plan calls for boosting renewable energy, Green Mountain is committed to helping consumers realize the benefits of residential solar. Not only is solar an investment in clean energy to protect the environment, it can also reduce monthly electric bills and protect consumers from future increases in energy costs," said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager of Green Mountain Energy. "We are honored to have been chosen by theEast Houston Solar Co-op, as we share the goal of maximizing the overall positive impact of going solar."

Additionally, Co-op members who are interested in purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle (EV) will receive additional unique benefits. Green Mountain is offering a Level 2 charger (up to $1,100 value) when members install a solar panel system that would supply enough electricity for a future EV. The company isalsoteaming up with an EV car-shopping concierge service to provide professional guidance on the EV purchasing or lease process, helping ensureCo-op membersget the best deal on their EV vehicle.
