NEW YORK – Green Mountain Energy Company today announced that renewable energy certificates (RECs) have been purchased by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s – Zuckerman Research Center located at 415 E. 68th Street, New York, NY. Green Mountain is the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy and carbon offset solutions.
Sloan Kettering is purchasing 31,500 wind RECs from Green Mountain over the one year term of its agreement. By purchasing the wind RECs, Sloan-Kettering is offsetting 100 percent of its estimated annual electricity usage for the Zuckerman Research Center, which generates an estimated 25 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). That’s the equivalent of over 7.5 million houses turning off their lights for a day, or taking more than 5,300 taxi cabs off the streets for a month.

Green power is generated from clean, renewable energy resources. Renewable energy facilities generate renewable energy certificates (RECs) when they produce electricity. Purchasing these certificates is a widely accepted way to address the greenhouse gas emissions of electricity consumption. Purchasing RECs in the same quantity as Sloan Kettering’s estimated electricity consumption ensures that the amount of energy used by the research center is added to the power grid from renewable sources and supports the further development of these projects.
