Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™ Now Accepting Applications for 2015 Solar Donations

Non-profit organizations interested in a donation of solar energy need to apply by June 15

AUSTIN, TX
– The Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™, a program that donates solar energy systems to non-profit organizations, is now accepting applicants for 2015 solar donations. Non-profits that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and to educating their community on the benefits of solar energy are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted through June 15, 2014.

The Sun Club provides solar donations on behalf of Green Mountain Energy Company, its residential customers, employees and supporters who contribute to the program. Since its founding in 2002, the Sun Club has donated more than $2.5 million to help install more than 600 kilowatts of solar power for a variety of non-profits.

While many Sun Club donations go toward rooftop solar arrays, recipients have also applied their monetary donations in other innovative ways. One of the 2014 solar donation recipients, Sea Turtle, Inc., in South Padre Island, Texas, is using its $30,000 donation to install amber-colored solar lights that will illuminate the outdoor area of their facility without confusing the newly hatched sea turtles, encouraging their travel to the coastline and not towards artificial light. The BLK ProjeK also used its funding towards an innovative solar installation this year. This 2014 Sun Club recipient is using its $12,000 donation to power onboard refrigeration for its delivery bus. The bus brings fresh fruits and vegetables to underserved communities in the Bronx, New York.

Each Sun Club donation recipient is unique in its mission and application of solar power. Many have also incorporated renewable energy initiatives on multiple levels throughout their missions. The program installed its 50th solar donation last year to Armand Bayou Nature Center, a non-profit nature preserve in Pasadena, Texas. “As an organization driven by the mission to preserve our natural resources and reconnect our community to nature, it is our great honor to be able to power our efforts with the help of pollution-free solar energy,” said Tom Kartrude, Executive Director of the Armand Bayou Nature Center.

“The Sun Club is proud to provide renewable energy to help power the missions of our non-profit recipients,” said Tony Napolillo, Sun Club Program Manager, Green Mountain Energy Company. “Helping non-profits install solar helps reduce their energy bills and educates their communities on renewable energy. We are excited to begin evaluating and working with new non-profit organizations in 2015.”

Criteria for awarding the solar donation:

Sun Club solar donation recipients are primarily chosen based on their needs, mission and ability to educate the communities they serve on the importance of solar energy. In addition, the organization must:

  • Own the site where the solar will be installed
  • Own and maintain the solar generation system on its property
  • Seek opportunities for ongoing public exposure to solar energy and the Sun Club
  • Non-profits where our residential customers are based in Illinois, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas are particularly encouraged to apply
