$50,000 donation from Sun Club provides renewable energy to No Kill, non-profit animal shelter
Leander, TX- The Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™ is making some new furry friends with a donation of $50,000 to Texas Humane Heroes (formerly the Humane Society of Williamson County) to fund the No Kill animal shelter’s first solar array. Texas Humane Heroes will also receive an accompanying educational display to teach visitors how renewable energy works. The Sun Club is a unique program enabling Green Mountain Energy Company’s residential customers, including many in Williamson County, to provide solar power to non-profits, like Texas Humane Heroes.
Texas Humane Heroes supports two No Kill shelter locations in Central Texas with the goal of placing animals in good homes with pet owners who are willing to make lifelong commitments to the animals. In 2012 alone, the organization found homes for 2,595 homeless dogs and cats. The solar array will generate electricity for the organization’s facilities, reducing their operating costs related to electric consumption and minimizing their environmental impact. The cost savings will allow them to expand their programs and increase awareness of both the environment and adoptable animals in the area.
“We are grateful for this generous donation from the Sun Club and look forward to introducing renewable energy to our organization,” said Ron Marullo, Executive Director, Texas Humane Heroes. “Combining cost savings on our electricity bill with renewable energy aligns with our goal of providing thousands of animals each year with safe shelter; finding permanent, loving homes for those pets; and utilizing sustainable business practices.”
The array will sit on the pavilion at the organization’s new Memorial Garden, which will serve as a quiet place to remember past pets and friends and host small celebrations and events.

The organization’s headquarters location in Leander operates on 22 acres in the Northern Greater Austin Metropolitan Area, hosting programs and events that bring an estimated 18,000 visitors to the property each year. As part of ongoing educational programs, the shelter invites students from local school districts and scout troops during the academic year to tour the shelter monthly and visit with the animals. With this donation from the Sun Club, visitors can now learn about cleaner energy and the solar array.
