About SolarSPARC

What is SolarSPARC® Electricity?

SolarSPARC® is an electricity product that offers Green Mountain Energy customers an innovative way to make a difference in the environment. By enrolling in the SolarSPARC® plan, customers help accelerate the adoption of solar energy and get rewarded for it. Not only does the SolarSPARC® plan provide electricity produced in whole or in part with solar energy, but it also helps fund efforts to make solar more affordable, effective, and available. And as a thank you, you'll get an annual solar credit that grows over time.

The potential applications of SolarSPARC® funds vary and may include providing full or partial subsidies or other types of incentives to any of the following:

  • Commercial, community, governmental, and nonprofit solar projects.
  • Residential or commercial solar rebates or other incentive programs to make solar more affordable. These programs may include energy storage and other solar-related technologies.
  • Other innovative technologies or business methods that help minimize the obstacles to widespread adoption of solar.

How does it work?

You simply enroll on the SolarSPARC product. For each month you’re on this plan, Green Mountain will set aside money to go toward a variety of projects, programs, and solar-related technologies that help make solar more affordable, effective, and available. Check our website periodically to learn about some of the initiatives we are supporting.

You will also receive a solar credit for each six-month period in which you’re continuously enrolled on the SolarSPARC product, payable annually. Your solar credit will increase each year you’re on the product, up to the maximum annual credit amount (noted in the chart below). See the SolarSPARC electricity Terms of Service or Customer Disclosure Statement for details.

  • Texas customers: You will receive a bill credit to your account that will be reflected in your January bill cycle and will be based on whether you enroll between January 1 and June 30 or July 1 and December 31.
  • Customers in all other states: You will receive your solar credit by mail in March, the amount of which will be based on whether you enroll between March 1 and August 31 or September 1 and February 28.

Where will the solar content of the SolarSPARC product come from?

With the purchase of the SolarSPARC electricity product, you are supporting cleaner electricity by matching the applicable percentage of your annual paid electricity usage with an equivalent amount of electricity produced by renewable sources of electricity generation in the United States. Green Mountain will purchase and retire renewable energy certificates (RECs) representing the environmental attributes associated with U.S. solar or wind energy generation for 100% of your paid usage, with the percentage of solar and wind depending on the content of the SolarSPARC product you select. Solar content percentage varies by product. For details, see the contract documents for the product you select.

How does the financial model work? Are you getting government or utility subsidies?

Through the SolarSPARC product, Green Mountain will use money set aside monthly on your behalf to help support efforts to make solar more affordable, effective, and available, regardless of whether there are existing government or utility subsidies and incentives. We will leverage any available subsidies or incentives to maximize the impact of our solar support through the SolarSPARC program.

What are the differences between the 100% solar products and the 10% solar, 90% wind products?

Our goal is to offer our customers choices in innovative electricity products, so SolarSPARC electricity is available in a 100% solar option as well as a more affordable option made from at least 10% solar and at most 90% wind energy.

In our markets outside of Texas, our 100% solar electricity plan includes a higher monthly contribution from Green Mountain toward the SolarSPARC fund. Customers can also select a more affordably priced 10% solar and 90% wind product that enables customers to support solar with less investment.

In Texas, the monthly amount set-aside for the SolarSPARC fund amount and the annual bill credit are the same for both the 100% solar and the 10% solar and /90% wind plan.

How does Green Mountain determine how, to whom, and when SolarSPARC funds are donated?

We consider all kinds of projects, programs, and innovations that will help to accelerate the adoption of solar energy by making it more affordable, effective, and available.

If you know of an idea or initiative worthy of SolarSPARC support, please send an email to let us know!

For current Green Mountain customers

I’m a Texas customer on the Renewable Rewards® product. Can I participate in SolarSPARC with a buy-back program?

Thank you for choosing to build renewable energy generation on your home. Unfortunately, you have to choose either the SolarSPARC product or the Renewable Rewards product (available in Texas only).

Can I still contribute to the Sun Club® program above and beyond the annual SolarSPARC credit?

Yes, Texas customers can still add $5 per month on their electricity bill for the Sun Club with the SolarSPARC plan. For customers outside of Texas, Green Mountain Energy automatically contributes on your behalf to the Sun Club each month. And of course all customers can make a one-time contribution to the Sun Club at any time. If you would like to make a contribution, please visit www.gmsunclub.com.

What happens if I move?

If you move within a Green Mountain service territory where SolarSPARC is available, you can continue on this plan and will remain eligible to receive your annual solar credit.

What if I’m no longer a customer at the time the annual credit is awarded?

You must be a Green Mountain SolarSPARC customer at the time the credit is awarded to receive your credit. Every customer in good standing on the SolarSPARC product at the time the credit is issued will receive a credit, regardless of when you sign up. See the SolarSPARC electricity contract documents for your product for details.

What's different about SolarSPARC?

How is this different than other solar products?

There are very few electricity products available today that include any solar content. That means the cost of retail electricity products that include solar tends to be higher than products made using other renewable energy sources, such as wind. Green Mountain is the first retail electricity supplier to offer customers a 100% solar electricity product in Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Illinois.

Why is this a great alternative to putting solar on my home?

Many people are unable to “go solar” because they:

  • Do not own their homes
  • Reside in an apartment or other multifamily home
  • Have homes that are not good candidates for solar because of roof orientation, too much shade from trees or buildings, or limited space to accommodate an array
  • Have concerns about the large up-front cost of a solar array
