Prepare Your Home For Cooler Temperatures

Now is the time to prepare your home for colder months so you can use less energy to stay comfortable all winter. Here are 3 simple solutions.

With the heat of summer still lingering in Texas, it’s hard to imagine that cold temperatures are just around the corner. However, now is the time to prepare your home for colder months so you can use less energy to stay comfortable all winter.

Here are three other causes of higher energy bills in the winter:

Problem #1: My thermostat is set at a high temperature but it’s still cold inside the house.
Solution: Air is probably escaping through window and door cracks throughout your house. In addition, if you’re heating empty rooms you’re wasting electricity. Seal leaks throughout your house using caulk and weather stripping tape, and close the vents in empty rooms.

Problem #2: My electricity bill continues to increase even though the thermostat temperature stays the same.
Solution: Your heater may be outdated and running inefficiently. It could be time for a tune-up or to consider investing in a new system.  The temperature outside may also be much colder than the previous months, causing your heater to run more often to maintain the same temperature.

Problem #3: It’s not practical to keep many of the lights off throughout my home.
Solution: Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) for your most used lights. CFLs are a little more expensive than incandescent bulbs but 75% more efficient. In fact, by switching out five standard light bulbs with CFLs, you can save up to $60 a year. They also last longer—up to 10,000 hours.
