New York’s Gotham Bar & Grill Goes Green

One of New York City’s most iconic restaurants just got a little greener thanks to a new partnership with electricity provider Green Mountain Energy Company.

The legendary Gotham Bar & Grill, founded in 1984 in historic Greenwich Village, has signed an agreement with Green Mountain to provide clean electricity to power its restaurant.

“Choosing to purchase 100% clean energy is an important step to build upon our ongoing sustainability efforts,” said Gotham’s general manager Bret Csencsitz. “From sourcing local food to supporting regional farmers, we are always looking for ways to broaden our environmental efforts. We’re excited about this new partnership.”

By choosing renewable energy over traditional fossil fuel generation, Gotham Bar & Grill is projected to avoid an estimated 928,624 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year. That’s equivalent to:

  • 1,103,415 miles not driven in a car
  • 111 trees planted
  • 30,279 incandescent light bulbs replaced with LED bulbs

“We’re thrilled that one of New York’s iconic restaurants has made this important commitment to support renewable energy,” said Doug Semmes, head of renewable strategy and partnerships for Green Mountain. “Gotham Bar & Grill joins both business and residential customers in New York and many other states who are choosing renewable energy at a price they can afford to help support America’s clean energy transformation.”

In addition to choosing to power its facility with clean energy, Gotham Bar and Grill is installing water saving devices that will reduce its water usage (as well as wastewater) dramatically, and it continues to look for ways to maximize sustainable benefits for the restaurant and promote a healthier, better environment for our future.
