It’s the month for love. Whether you’re married, booed up or looking for your lovebird, you gotta open your heart to one more—the planet.
Our environment deserves a heart-shaped “thank you” for all that it does for us—fresh air, blue waters and plant life. Maybe it’s not a chocolate heart or singing greeting card, but there are ways to let the planet feel your love.
Try one of these tips for Valentine’s Day. It’ll be like batting emoji heart eyes at the planet.
1. Use your power of influence
We all have that one friend or family member who could do a bit more for the planet—maybe they need to ease up on plastic water bottles or start a recycling bin. Have a heart-to-heart (it is the month for love) chat with them about how important it is for everyone to pitch in.
The idea of switching all your lightbulbs can feel a bit daunting, so don’t do it all at once. Aim for two rooms a weekend, and you’ll probably finish in less than a month. Once you’ve made the switch, sit back and enjoy using 75% less energy than traditional bulbs (and having them last 25 times longer).
3. Consider solar, seriously
Have you taken the time to really look at the benefits of installing residential solar? You might be surprised once you weigh the costs and benefits of turning your roof into a clean energy magnet. You can decrease your energy expenses, boost your home’s value and have a big, positive impact on the planet.
4. Watch the waste
Don’t replace tech gear, household appliances or home décor until you really need to. According to the EPA, in 2015, food and plastic combined accounted for almost 41% of waste in landfills. We can do better. Check out the blogs Stop Food Waste in Your Home and Stop Waste by Reusing, Repurposing and Upcycling for tips on how to reduce waste in your everyday life.
5. Choose clean energy
If you’ve read our blog a time or two, then you know this is one of our favorites. That’s because it’s easy, convenient and super impactful (in a positive way!) for our planet. Watch this video for a reminder of why it’s important to choose electricity generated from renewable sources. And be part of our mission of changing the way power is made. Find a plan today.
