The historic Tarrytown Music Hall has provided local residents with a place to enjoy quality programs and learn about theater for the past 125 years. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Green Mountain Energy Sun Club®, the Music Hall is also an example of how a 19th-century building can become a showcase for renewable energy.
The building’s new solar array will produce nearly 28,000 kilowatt-hours per year, offsetting 27 percent of the theater’s annual energy consumption. The savings will enable the Music Hall to continue growing as a leading presenter in the performing arts space while demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.
The Tarrytown Music Hall, built in 1885, is not only the oldest theater in Westchester County, but also one of the oldest and most historic in the entire United States. Today, it is fully restored and is one of the busiest theaters in the region, offering the best in music, theater, dance and film. The cultural destination attracts more than 85,000 guests annually and generates over $1 million for the local community.
The theater, accompanied by the Sun Club, commemorated the donation with a “flip the switch” event on Sunday, Dec. 6, prior to the start of the theater’s production of “The Nutcracker.”
Since 2002, the Sun Club has donated more than $4 million to non-profits all over the country, and the installation at the Tarrytown Music Hall is its 86th solar endowment. Contributions to the Sun Club come from Green Mountain Energy Company’s residential customers, the company and its employees, and other Sun Club supporters who believe in providing a more sustainable future to our local communities.
Non-profit organizations interested in applying for a sustainability grant from the Sun Club can now apply for projects under any of the program’s new pillars, including: Renewables – solar, other renewable technologies; Environment – water conservation, air quality, waste reduction, sustainable agriculture; Community – energy efficiency upgrades, green commuting initiatives, public space enhancements; Education – environmental stewardship, promotion of careers in sustainability. Sun Club donation applications are available on the website.
Thank you to all of our Sun Club supporters for believing in our mission and helping make donations like this one at Tarrytown Music Hall possible. Click here to make a one-time, tax-deductible donation to the Sun Club or visit www.gmsunclub.com to learn more.
