Green Mountain Energy has been a supporter of The Food Trust in Philadelphia for years, serving as the lead green energy sponsor of its farmers’ market network and Night Market Philadelphia, one of the city’s premier food festivals.
Yesterday, we were excited to celebrate the market’s Harvest Day at the Christian Street YMCA to promote back-to-school healthy eating and the change in the seasons. This location joined The Food Trust’s family of markets in June thanks to Green Mountain, a founding sponsor.
Supporting the Food Trust means making a healthy and sustainable choice for your family and your local community – but you’re also doing something good for the environment!
Most people don’t realize this, but the distance that your food travels from farm to market is probably farther than you think. Food in the U.S. travels on average 1,500-2,500 miles from farm to fork – that’s about the same distance from the Liberty Bell in Philly to Houston, Texas! In most cases, locally produced food proves the best choice for minimizing global warming and other pollutants.
Next time you’re in the Philadelphia area, check out The Food Trust’s local farmers markets and support the growth of healthy food retail for your health and the environment!
