Don’t let lack of preparation hurricane all over your summer

Hurricane Season Is Here

I’ve lived in Texas nearly all my life, and have family in Long Island, New York, so for me, summer is as synonymous with sunscreen as it is the start of hurricane season.  If you call home to one of the fine states that hurricanes seem to frequent, or you are visiting that way this summer, make sure you’re ready when a hurricane surfaces. Here are some hurricane preparedness tips and info…

What: Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that can produce winds of 155 miles per hour, tornadoes, heavy rainstorms and storm surges.

When: Most common in the U.S. between June and November

Where: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, and North Carolina as well as states along the eastern shore all the way up to Maine

How:  Prepare for hurricanes with tips like these from Ready.gov:

  • Be informed – do your homework about what may come your way
  • Make a plan – know what to do and make sure your family is on board
  • Build a Kit – have items ready-to-go, such as water, non-perishable food, important phone numbers and a first aid kit

Other great tips:

Power outage: If your power is out, please contact your utility.

Solar power chargers can be a hero if you’re waiting for the power to come back on. Standalone devices made by Goal Zero® can charge your cell phone or even a portable refrigerator and are available on Green Mountain’s online store.

Hope all of you stay safe and enjoy your summer!
