In a special Earth Day dedication, the Sun Club completed its first solar array installation in Pennsylvania by “flipping the switch” on a solar farm stand at Greensgrow Farms, an urban farmer’s market in Philadelphia. The new, free-standing structure topped with solar panels will generate renewable energy and help reduce electricity costs for the non-profit, made possible by a $20,000 donation from the Sun Club to the farm last year.
The array is large enough to generate an estimated 4,900 kilowatt-hours of pollution-free energy and avoid an estimated 9,600 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Energy savings from the solar can enable Greensgrow to feed all of their farm animals (including Milkshake the pig, Ping the duck, and Blanche the cat, among others) for an entire year!
The solar dedication ceremony took place to coincide with Greensgrow’s annual Neighborhood Greening event in honor of Earth Day. More than 40 Greensgrow and Green Mountain employees and volunteers replanted flowers that decorated last month’s PHS Philadelphia Flower Show in an effort to beautify the farm’s surrounding neighborhoods.
