Cost Savings From Solar Helps Save Puppies and Kittens!

Texas Humane Heroes Solar Pavilion

EDITOR’S NOTE: Following is a guest post from Eran Fehily, Director of Community Relations & Development at Texas Humane Heroes.

In April 2013, the Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™ donated a solar array pavilion to my organization, Texas Humane Heroes, an animal welfare organization with adoption centers in Leander and Killeen, Texas. Check out the installation here.

In addition to the array providing shade for visitors strolling through our new memorial garden, we had hoped to reduce our energy costs and our carbon ‘paw’ print. We are thrilled to announce that since the array’s installation just a few months ago, it has already produced 8.23 MWh of electricity — the equivalent of powering 272 houses for one day! This has reduced our monthly electricity bill by one-third.

Our monthly savings are going back into our programs, which allow us to save even more animals from being euthanized at local municipal shelters. In fact, since April, Texas Humane Heroes has found forever homes for 1,521 dogs and cats, and with continued revenue savings from our new solar array we will save even more! As if that isn’t impressive enough, the pollution-free electricity produced from the sun’s energy has offset 5.64 tons of carbon dioxide that normally would have been produced by traditional fossil fuel power plants.

Helping animals and the planet, thanks to the Sun Club, is what we’re all about. We couldn’t be happier about the feat. Thank you again, Sun Club members, for your generous donation which will benefit Texas Humane Heroes for the next 25-30 years!
