Rock a Smaller Carbon Footprint at ACL Festival 2012

If you’re a music lover, you know that Austin City Limits Music Festival is one of the largest music festivals in the nation and will be rocking our hometown Austin, TX October 12-14. What you may not have known is that ACL makes a major effort each year to reduce its environmental impact.

C3 Presents’ commitment to protecting the environment is incorporated into all aspects of planning the festival, including working with Green Mountain Energy Company for 6 years now to offset the carbon dioxide emissions created by the event’s generators, purchased electricity, staff travel, festival vehicles, and all artists’ travel to and from the event.

Because driving, flying, and taking the bus all have a carbon footprint that contributes to climate change, festival-goers are encouraged to offset their travel carbon footprint by purchasing a Green Mountain Energy® Fan Tag wristband. For just $3, the Fan Tag balances out 220 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the average amount of pollution created by traveling to ACL Festival. The offsets benefit the environment as much as:

  • Not driving a car 245 miles
  • Recycling 550 aluminum cans
  • As much as 13 trees can absorb in one year

All carbon offsets purchased from ACL Festival 2012 will benefit the SouthTex Greenwood Farm Landfill project in Tyler, TX. The landfill has special equipment that captures naturally occurring landfill gas, which contains methane.  Methane is a harmful greenhouse gas with over 20 times the potency of carbon dioxide.  The landfill gas is purified, injected into the local natural gas pipeline, and used to heat homes and businesses in the Tyler area.  The project is third party certified by the Climate Action Reserve, which means the offsets are real, permanent, additional, and verifiable.
