In February, Green Mountain had the honor of being the green power provider for Super Bowl XLVI – and this month, we had another opportunity to help green up an important sports event. Green Mountain Energy partnered with 11th Hour Racing and Manuka Sports Event Management to make the 2012 Atlantic Cup the first ever carbon neutral sailing race in the United States.
The two leg race saw 14 sailboats from all over the world race from Charleston, SC, to New York City, then on to Newport, RI. Before the second leg from
Before the race, Green Mountain Energy calculated the event’s carbon footprint. Based on these calculations and a post-race assessment that is now underway, carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates (RECs) will be retired in order to offset emissions associated with the event, such as staff air travel, ground and water transportation, staff hotel stays, and event electricity usage. We are estimating that offsetting the race’s carbon footprint will balance out 14,000 lbs of CO2 emissions, which is like 4,000 houses turning off all of their lights for one day!
