What if you could declare freedom from the gas pump? With the growing infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations being built across the nation, that dream is quickly becoming a reality for EV owners. Aside from the cost benefit of not having to fill up the gas tank, driving an EV helps cut down on greenhouse gases and reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil.
A recent article in Wired Magazine says the most significant questions for the future of EV’s is where we will plug them in. Luckily, some leading companies are making it quick and convenient to charge an EV away from home, for commuters during their daily drive or while running errands. One of those is NRG Energy whose eVgo Network is creating electric vehicle charging networks for at home and on-the-go. eVgo’s Freedom Stations and Convenience Stations, located at retail stores such as Walgreen’s and Best Buy, will provide convenient EV charging options throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston metro areas. NRG plans to install a total of 70 Freedom Station sites in DFW and 50 in Houston by the end of 2012.
Walgreens just announced it will become the country’s biggest host for public electric vehicle charging stations by the end of 2011, with over 800 chargers installed. Walgreens will partner with eVgo in Texas and with companies like 350Green to install charging stations in the New York metro and other major cities.
Green Mountain Energy Company is the first Retail Electric Provider in Texas to partner with eVgo, meaning that Green Mountain customers who drive an EV can sign up for eVgo’s Complete Charging Plan as part of our Pollution FreeSM EV product, which combines a home charging dock with access to on-the-go charging stations.
