Green Mountain Energy® Solar at the Waco Chamber of Commerce

About the Project

  • The Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and Green Mountain Energy Company have partnered to install a solar array for the Chamber’s new environmentally sustainable headquarters which opened June 6, 2008 located at 101 S. Third St. at Heritage Square.
  • The installation is the largest solar array in downtown Waco and may be the largest in McLennan County.
  • Groundbreaking for the 9.6 kilowatt (kW) solar array occurred in May 2008; the solar installation was completed in August 2008.
  • The 720-square-foot solar array is mounted on the building’s roof and was built with 48 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels that convert sunlight into electricity, producing 9.6 kW of clean energy.
  • The Green Mountain Energy® Solar at the Waco Chamber of Commerce is helping to power approximately 6.5 percent of the new Chamber building’s annual electrical usage.
  • The solar array can annually offset more than 26,500 pounds of carbon dioxide (C02), a greenhouse gas that is a leading contributor of global warming. This has the same environmental impact of not driving a car almost 30,000 miles or the annual sequestration from more than 1,500 trees. Further, it is equivalent to recycling more than 66,000 aluminum cans and more than 10,500 pounds of newspaper.
  • Green Mountain's Big Texas Sun Club® completely funded the solar array at the new Waco Chamber of Commerce headquarters.

About the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce

  • The Greater Waco Chamber is a volunteer association of businesses, professionals and individuals working together to build a healthy business environment, promote economic development and work effectively to improve the quality of life in the Greater Waco area. The new Chamber headquarters building was completed in June 2008.
  • The Chamber’s new 14,000-square-foot building is Greater Waco’s first green building and was built to meet LEED standards. The solar array will earn the building a possible LEED point based on the percentage of annual savings.
